San Francisco has an amazing number of low priced joints that often serve wonderful food. At some of the Mexican places in the Mission, for example, you can still fill up on delicious burritos, tacos, and the like, for under $5.00. Chinese restaurants are also usually good value.

Unfortunately, there was a racist backlash against them, resulting in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and China town became a kind of ghetto, full of opium dens and vice. The Act was repealed in 1943, and things have steadily improved ever since. $Old Chinese Telephone Exchange This three-tiered pagoda is now the Bank of Canton, and is the most distinctive work of architectural chinoiserie in China- town.
